Fireplace sounds

Fire works differently from the other sounds here. Rain and wind mask by being constant; a fireplace works by being close and irregular, giving a room a sense of occupied warmth. It is the sound of somewhere you already are rather than weather happening outside.

That irregularity is a trade-off worth knowing. The pops and cracks are exactly what makes fire feel alive, and they are also why it masks less reliably than broadband noise — if your goal is covering a noisy street, rain or white noise will do more work.

Where it excels is atmosphere. A fireplace under rain is a cabin in a storm; under wind it is a shelter on an exposed night; with forest and birds it is a camp at dusk. Almost every cosy mix people build starts from this layer.

Keep it low enough that individual cracks are a texture rather than an event. Turned up too far, the pops become the thing you are listening to instead of the room you are sitting in.
