Thunder sounds

Thunder is the layer that gives a rain mix its depth. What matters is the distance: a close, sharp crack startles, and a startle is the opposite of what you want when you are trying to sleep or concentrate. This loop is deliberately far away — long, rolling rumbles with the transient edge already softened.

Because the energy sits low in the spectrum, thunder fills in underneath rain rather than competing with it. Rain covers the mid and high frequencies, thunder holds the bottom, and the result feels like weather rather than like two sounds playing at once.

Used alone it is sparse by design, with real silence between rumbles. Most people run it quietly under something else: rain for a classic storm, wind for an exposed and open one, a fireplace for the view from indoors.

Start it low — lower than feels right at first. Thunder is the layer that most often ends up too loud, because the rumbles are intermittent and you set the level during one of them.
